Spin up your blood pumps because Aunt Corrinne needs your platelets!
In the spirit of solidarity (and cut-throat family competitiveness), this is a challenge for all the Kulicks, Lengen(and Krop)felders, Ciuffos, Doyles, Vigneulles, and friends to get out there and compete for a good cause. Whoever gives the most wins cash!
Why are platelet donations needed?
Platelets are cells made in bone marrow that are responsible for blood clotting. Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) can put you at risk for excessive bleeding.
Two of the cancer treatments Aunt Corrinne is taking (carboplatin and paclitaxel) are commonly associated with bone marrow suppression and thrombocytopenia. If her platelet count drops too low, her doctor may request a platelet transfusion. A patient can receive up to 100 units throughout treatment.
Platelets have a shelf life between 5-7 days outside the body, so donations are needed constantly to keep supplies up. So let’s keep them up!
